NEWCASTLE UNITED CHALLENGES ARSENAL FOR JULIAN BRANDT AS DORTMUND EXIT NEARS
Newcastle United joins Arsenal in the hunt for Julian Brandt. Discover why Andrea Berta is worried and what Brandt said about his future.
Newcastle United want to bring Julian Brandt to St James’ Park, and that’s got Arsenal’s sporting director Andrea Berta worried since he’s been pushing hard to sign Brandt for the Emirates. According to reports from Germany, Newcastle’s interest is real and growing.
Back in March, TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey said Arsenal are eyeing a summer 2026 deal for Brandt, who’s set to leave Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season. Berta hopes to land the German international as a free agent, and sources close to the situation say Arsenal are getting ready to make a formal offer for Brandt, who’s racked up 57 goals and 69 assists in 303 games across all competitions for Dortmund.
At 29, Brandt is playing some of his best football. He can slot in as an attacking midfielder or out wide on the left, which fits nicely with what Arsenal need.
But Newcastle aren’t the only club chasing him. Aston Villa are in the mix too, and according to Fussball Daten, both Villa and Arsenal are prepping aggressive offers for Brandt’s creativity. Serie A’s Inter Milan want him, and LaLiga sides Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are keeping tabs as well. Even FC Cincinnati, out in Major League Soccer, has supposedly shown interest.
So, where does Brandt stand? Newcastle’s had a tough season, and they won’t be playing in Europe in 2026/27, while Arsenal could still win both the Premier League and Champions League this year. It looks like Arsenal have the upper hand, but Brandt hasn’t decided where he’ll go next.
Speaking to Sky Germany earlier this month, Brandt said, “Let yourself be surprised. There are many ideas. Not every idea is good, but there are many ideas. In principle, I’m not ruling anything out. But there are things I prefer, and there are things I currently find harder to imagine. As I said, there are one or two ideas, but everything in due course.”
For now, though, he’s focused on finishing the season with Dortmund. According to Brandt, “You don’t have to rush things. We’re approaching the end of the season, but we still have important games ahead. It wouldn’t be fair to the club to start holding talks everywhere. You have to finish things properly, and then you have plenty of time to think about what’s next. I’m not worried about it at all.”
NEWCASTLE UNITED SET A £75 MILLION VALUATION FOR BAYERN-LINKED WINGER ANTHONY GORDON
Newcastle United faces a massive summer. Discover the latest on Anthony Gordon’s Bayern link, the pursuit of Allan Elias, and Howe’s future.
Newcastle United looks set for a busy summer transfer window, with activity expected on both the incoming and outgoing fronts.
The club is currently navigating a period of uncertainty following a disappointing domestic season. Eddie Howe is scheduled to meet with the Public Investment Fund executives next week, as speculation about his future at St. James' Park continues to swirl.
Under Howe’s guidance, Newcastle hasn’t reached the kind of heights supporters had become used to. This campaign, they seem poised to miss out on European competition, which brings its own challenges.
Without the lure of Europe, Newcastle might see several key players depart during the summer. There seems to be a consensus that parting ways with some of their top stars is inevitable.
Regarding Anthony Gordon, Sky Sports reports that he could become a Bayern Munich player before the World Cup kicks off in the United States, with Newcastle anticipating a bid this summer. Gordon reportedly favours a move to the Bundesliga, influenced by Michael Olise’s successful path since joining Bayern.
However, none of the reports delves into the financial side in detail. According to The Times, Newcastle is expected to ask for around £75 million for Gordon. This figure is about £20 million higher than the £55 million Bundesliga clubs have been linked with in various reports. Still, Newcastle might be open to a sale if Bayern meets their valuation.
On another front, Newcastle is again linked with Brazilian winger Allan. Italian sources, including ASRomaLive, suggest that the Magpies face competition from Roma, Napoli, and Aston Villa for the Palmeiras star.
Palmeiras reportedly wants close to €35 million (about £30.5 million) for the 22-year-old and isn't flexible on that price. Liverpool, Chelsea, and Zenit St. Petersburg have also been mentioned as potential bidders. A sticking point might be the payment structure, as Palmeiras prefers a lump sum rather than instalments, a condition that could complicate matters for Villa and Newcastle alike.
ALAN SHEARER ISSUES DAMNING VERDICT ON EDDIE HOWE’S SURVIVAL AT ST. JAMES’ PARK
Newcastle United face an uncertain future after a 4th straight defeat. Eddie Howe remains in charge but faces a crucial test at Arsenal.
Alan Shearer finally said it: he doesn’t expect Eddie Howe to stick around at Newcastle United.
He’s clearly fed up, and for the first time, he’s questioned whether Howe’s up for the fight to stay in charge at St. James’ Park. Still, Shearer tried to defend Howe while slamming the players for their “terrible” performance in that 2-1 loss to Bournemouth. According to Shearer, they “threw their boss under the bus".
Newcastle’s now lost four games in a row, across all competitions. They’re down in 14th place and have to go to Arsenal next. That’s not where anybody at the club wants to be.
Talking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer didn’t hold back: “Did you see the game? The players were shocking. As tough as things are for Eddie, I’ve got no idea what’s next for him. I heard his interview after the match and looked at him. I just wondered, does he really want to go through this all over again? Will he even get the chance?
“A lot is going on behind the scenes from his point of view. I want him to stay, but does he even think he’ll get the opportunity? Does he want it? If Newcastle have to start selling players, that’s a whole other problem.
“If they’ve got money to spend and can hold on to players, fine, but after watching the team yesterday, if that’s their idea of fighting for the manager, especially with all the pressure he’s under, they were just awful.
“They absolutely threw him under the bus. Every single one of them. The performance was crap. It’s a tough spot for Howe. Newcastle’s got a really difficult summer ahead, and they’ve got some massive decisions to make.”
When Gary Lineker asked if Howe should leave, Shearer didn’t dodge the question. “Honestly, as I sit here, I just don’t see Eddie managing Newcastle next season.”
He continued, “I watched his interview after the game, and I don’t think he’s got the fight left. The club’s changed so much from when he first arrived; it’s just not the same job. Eddie doesn’t look in a good place right now.”
